Is higher FPS = Better gun?

The AIRSOFT AEG MYTH Buster

"Jack Pot! My AEG shoots 418 FPS out of the box!"
Often we see stoked first time Airsoft AEG buyers excited about receiving an AEG shooting at out of ordinary FPS. Seeing the 0.28g bb becoming the new 0.25g bb (which was the new 0.20g bb); spawned the desire and urgency for me to write this article.

The game of Airsoft was originally created to project a 0.20g sphere projectile efficiently (efficient then, means "range"), at a velocity and joule output that is fun! (where fun is universally defined as amusing, entertaining, or enjoyable)

Is higher FPS = Better gun = more fun?
In a nut shell, a $30 bb gun you can pick up at Wal-Mart can shoot to 500 FPS. Putting in a stronger spring to shoot higher FPS is not magic. With a stronger spring it comes with higher battery drain, lower rate of fire, and may require you to downgrade your gun for certain Airsoft fields. The game of Airsoft innately thrive on certain guidelines (such as FPS limitation) for a community to enjoy the many other aspect of the sport / hobby that makes Airsoft awesome! Lets circle back to the origin, where Airsoft average FPS was 280 FPS 20+ years ago, remained 1 Joule in Japan still today, and is a thriving sport where millions enjoy at 1 Joule. We want to remind the manufactures and field owners that Airsoft is not about shooting harder. The sport and game of Airsoft is only fun when there are clearly defined boundaries in equipment, and these "boundaries" are common sense and physics.

Let us know what are your thoughts by commenting below. What do you think an indoor field's FPS limit should be? What do you think should be some guide lines that worked well in your local fields that all the field owners can learn from?
